As a veteran Defensive Firearms Trainer, I don’t condone unsafe or irresponsible gun handling-- on the contrary, my ballistic containment products were created to remove the worry of “What if…? Resulting in better, more confident gun handlers overall. Students and other trainers will often shy away from the subject of unintentional discharges. Most prefer to believe that mistakes and tragedy of this sort always happen to some other (less qualified) guy.
Defensive Firearm Mastery, as in the practice of any Martial Art, requires a continual return to the basics. Muzzle awareness and trigger finger position must be in your consciousness each and every time a firearm is handled. With that, we must admit that we’re human, and as a consequence, capable of distraction and error. The intent of every true defensive martial artist is to do no harm when harm is not intended.
Here are 2 examples of good, honest, and trained people for whom the unintentional discharge didn’t happen to the “other guy”. Safe Direction is immensely grateful to these folks who generously shared their stories. –Steve Camp
